Articles and studies about the buying habits and values of “Millennials” have been the topic of many articles and blogs lately. This generation of 13-29 year olds represent a large progressive-thinking population who are leading many of today’s consumption trends, spending $172 billion annually. It is important to understand the values of this demographic in order to properly target them when advertising your products and services.
According to a survey from Generate Insight, reported by MarketingCharts, a strong value in this demographic’s mind is the importance of living and buying green.
• 87% of Millennials recycle; 84% turn off lights when not in use; 80% reduce water use; and 73% use energy-efficient light bulbs
• 76% of Millennials feel it's very important or important for brands to get involved in the green movement
Millennials will be more likely to become patrons of companies with similar values as their own. They appreciate businesses that make the ethical effort to do what is best for the environment. Educate these potential customers about the environmentally friendly efforts your company makes.
• Does your company use recyclable items or energy efficient electronics?
• Do you donate to causes that support the community or environment?
• Are there programs in place that reward customers for returning reusable containers to your store?
