Going Green: Good for You, Good for the Environment
Nowadays it seems that everyone is “Going Green.” Trendy or not, considering the environment is a responsible approach to doing business and is something of value to many customers. Being more conservative with energy can also lead to a better bottom line, which is good for you.
Take advantage of this movement, it is easier for you to quickly make the shift to sustainable practices than your larger counterparts. If you start early and promote your new green profile to customers, you can reap the rewards before deep-pocketed competitors jump in.
Here are some simple ways to move in a more environmentally friendly direction:
• Use high-efficiency light bulbs, such as compact fluorescents (they will cost you 75% less to run and last 10 times as long!). Also, encourage staff to be mindful about turning off machines and lights when not in use.
• Computers, televisions, stereos and other appliances continue to draw a small amount of power when they are switched off. Unplug these appliances or switch off power strips to cut all power to the appliance.
• Think of ways to reduce driving done by employees. Use teleconferences and email instead of face–to–face meetings.
• Shop for energy-efficient computers, printers, copiers, monitors, fax machines, etc. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy recommend using EnergyStar products.
Involve customers in your efforts. This builds a relationship between you and your patrons and provides them with an easy way to do something positive. Encourage customers to bring in their own bags or recycle products when possible. Then, reward such customers with discounts or perks-which encourages loyal patronage.
Share your responsible practices to go green with current and potential customers via a company newsletter, e-mail blast or other marketing channels.
